Madinet Masr Revives Historic Cairo with “Buyut Al-Khalifa” Heritage Project

In line with its sustainability and social responsibility strategy, Madinet Masr (EGX: MASR.CA), a leading real estate developer in Egypt, has announced the launch of the “Buyut Al-Khalifa” project in collaboration with the Built Environment Collective, under the auspices of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The project aims to rejuvenate Al-Rukbiyya Street in the heart of Historic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by restoring its urban heritage and improving the quality of life for local communities.

Preserving Cultural Identity through Sustainable Urban Revitalization

The Buyut Al-Khalifa project spans 3,000 square meters and includes:

  • Restoration of two historic buildings
  • Refurbishment of 19 modern building facades
  • Development of 1,200 sqm of public spaces with greenery, paving, and lighting
  • Establishment of two urban farms using groundwater from nearby heritage sites

This initiative integrates sustainable development with heritage conservation by promoting traditional crafts, creating educational and job opportunities, and fostering community engagement.

Dena Habib, Vice President of Corporate Relations at Madinet Masr, added:“Sustainability guides every aspect of our operations.

Buyut Al-Khalifa reflects our holistic approach to environmental, social, and economic impact, while preserving Egypt’s rich identity for future generations.”

Part of a Broader Heritage Development Ecosystem

The Buyut Al-Khalifa project is part of the Built Environment Collective’s Athar Lina (“Heritage is Ours”) initiative launched in 2012, which takes a participatory approach to urban conservation.

The project also aligns with two national tourism efforts: the Citadel Square Development and the “Descendants of the Prophet” heritage route, which passes through the area.

Implementation will begin in May 2025, with a three-year timeline focused on sustainable construction and eco-friendly materials, forming a replicable model for urban heritage conservation.
