According to the latest Kaspersky Managed Detection and Response (MDR) analyst report, the government and development sectors witnessed a significant drop in high-severity cyber incidents in 2024.
Meanwhile, the food, IT, telecom, and industrial sectors saw a notable increase in cybersecurity threats requiring direct human intervention.
Key Findings from Kaspersky’s MDR Report
The annual Managed Detection and Response (MDR) analyst report provides in-depth insights into cyber incidents, their distribution across industries, and the evolving tactics of threat actors. The data is based on incidents detected by Kaspersky MDR throughout 2024.
Compared to 2023, there was a significant rise in cyber incidents within the mass media, development, and telecom sectors. However, high-severity incidents, which involve direct human engagement, showed a different distribution:
IT sector accounted for 23% of high-severity incidents.
Government and industrial sectors each experienced 18% of these incidents.
The government and development industries saw a threefold decrease in high-severity incidents, while the food sector experienced a rise in such cases. Additionally, the industrial sector showed a sharp increase, accompanied by moderate growth in retail, IT, and telecom sectors.
Interestingly, despite the mass media sector experiencing an overall increase in incidents, there was no corresponding rise in high-severity cases. This suggests that early detection and rapid mitigation prevented threats from escalating to critical levels.
Insights from Kaspersky Experts
“In 2024, we observed a shift in the cyber threat landscape, with high-severity incidents becoming more concentrated in the food sector, emphasizing the urgent need for cybersecurity in this area,” said Sergey Soldatov, Head of Security Operations Center at Kaspersky.
“While industries like telecom and mass media faced a surge in overall incidents, their ability to detect and neutralize threats quickly highlights the importance of proactive cybersecurity strategies. As cybercriminals refine their techniques, organizations must invest in advanced security solutions that integrate cutting-edge technologies with expert oversight to stay ahead of evolving threats.”
Strengthening Cybersecurity Measures
To enhance protection against sophisticated cyberattacks, businesses should:
Deploy robust cybersecurity solutions.
Hire qualified security experts or leverage managed security services like Managed Detection and Response (MDR) and Incident Response.
Utilize security services that cover the entire incident management cycle, from threat identification to remediation.
These measures ensure continuous protection against advanced cyber threats and provide expert support, even for companies with limited in-house security teams.
